Basic Survival Course
June 6 @ 8:00am - June 9 @ 5:00pm
Adirondack Mountains, NY
THIS COURSE IS NOT BY READYMAN
During the Basic Survival Course we will teach you the skills you need to survive an emergency situation. You are going to learn everything you need to do until you can either self-rescue or be rescued.
This course is focused on being prepared ahead of time with the necessary gear to provide for your needs. We will teach you what to pack so that you are ready for emergencies and how to use it effectively. This allows you to be more prepared for an emergency as you develop additional skills and gain valuable experience during future courses and become less and less reliant on gear.
Emphasis will be placed on critical thinking and prioritizing tasks to meet your needs during an emergency. You will learn techniques for starting and maintaining fires in an emergency. This includes everything you need to know about modern ignition sources, emergency tinder, and proper fire lays. You will learn how to build simple and effective shelters to protect you from exposure to the elements. In addition, we will teach you how to filter and disinfect water to make it safe to drink, build a foundation of easy to identify wild edibles, and some useful trapping and fishing techniques.
More importantly, you will be taught techniques that could prevent a survival situation from happening in the first place. You will learn basic first aid for common wilderness injuries, basic map reading, and land navigation. You will also learn techniques to signal for rescue both day and night.
This course is the foundation for the Intermediate and Advanced Survival Courses. You must complete this course prior to attending either of those. This is a patch-earning course. Upon successful completion, you will earn the coveted Flint & Steel Critical Skills Group patch with the “Basic” rocker. These cannot be purchased and are only available to students that earn them through training.
