It is important to remember that most criminals are not out looking to start a fight. In fact, a good majority of them are looking for an easy victim that they can make a quick dollar from, and when presented with resistance in any degree they will call off the action. Takers take from those who are willing to be taken from.
Having solid situational awareness of your surroundings, the tools you need to defend yourself on hand, and the willingness to present a hard target is sometimes all you need to end a bad situation outright. Criminals are generally not prepared or expecting resistance when they commit crimes, and when they do, the crime is generally stopped in the instant there is adversity.
The woman instantly clocks the three men walking towards her vehicle in the street as she is pulling out of her driveway, and slightly angles the back of her vehicle towards them while keeping the front of her van close to the wall, effectively creating a trap for the man who approaches on her passenger side. This technique allowed her to open fire on the first attacker approaching her vehicle, which wards off the second and third attacker, pushing them into a full retreat.
Had the officer not had the presence of mind to stay aware of her surroundings while she was moving, and the tools on hand that she needed to defend herself, she would have become the victim of a car-jacking at the very least. At the end of the event, she then exits her vehicle and checks the surrounding to ensure she is out of danger.
If you can resist a violent criminal who appears to be looking for a quick dollar, and not a fight, resist with everything you are worth. If you refuse to be the victim, you will often prevent yourself from becoming one.
