In a situation where you are facing an armed robber, it is imperative that you bide your time until the exact right moment. Staying aware of your attacker’s composure, intentions, and positioning will allow you to find the opportune moment to survive the robbery through compliance or afford you the exact right timing to launch a counter-attack to defend yourself and your property.
What you are about to see is an example of a store-clerk feigning compliance until the exact moment he has an opening to launch an attack. The robber, who is armed with a pistol, will leave himself open to an attack at two separate points, and both times the store-clerk will capitalize on the opening in order to turn the tide of the attempted robbery into his favor.
The following footage was recorded on the security camera systems of a shop somewhere in Chicago.
At the onset of the robbery, the clerk feigns compliance with the robber’s demands. This puts the robber into a state of mind that pushes him towards thinking that the person he has chosen to victimize is a willing victim. For the duration of their encounter however, the store-clerk continues to keep an eye on the robber while he awaits an opportunity to take back the initiative from the armed robber.
It isn’t until the robber offers an opening at the cash register that the store-clerk is able to make his move, but when he does, he fully commits to the action. Using raw strength, he pummels the attacker in the head with his fists, and immediately wrestles control of the firearm away from the robber. Once the clerk has control of the firearm, he then puts distance between himself and the robber to use the firearm to regain leverage in the situation while he dials for police support.
If you ever find yourself in a similar situation, ensure that you are keeping an eye on your attackers. At the same time, remain calm enough to make sound judgements based on the disposition and position of your attackers. If you see the opportunity to fight back and think that you can overcome your attacker in that moment you have to fully commit to the action.
